Is Android Really Open Source?
In an almost conclusive tone, the report states that Google’s size, a huge amount of marketing dollars from carriers and vendors, and the need to counter Apple are all more responsible for Android’s success than the actual OS or the open source licensing.
“Android would not have risen were it not for the billions of dollars that OEMs and network operators poured into Android in order to compete with Apple’s iconic devices,” the firm wrote. “As Stephen Elop, Nokia’s CEO, said in June, 2011, ‘Apple created the conditions necessary for Android.’ (bgr.com, 2011).
Here is a copy of the infographic from visionmobile.com. Be sure to head over to BGR.com to read the entire article by Zach Epstein on December 13th, 2011.
5 Principals of Innovation
1. Think Small
A small idea has potential to grow into something phenomenal. Thinking too big can lead to enormous and daunting goals and wishes that never come to fruition.
2. Disruptive innovations are crappy
Disruptive innovations strive to change an entire industry or create a new market. The problem is, they often take something and simply dumb it down. It targets consumers who are looking for products that are superior to existing products in some ways while eliminating some of the ‘extra’ functionality that they may not need. Sometimes these innovations take products and make them “good enough”.
3. Innovation is combination
Innovative products usually take flight when they are coupled with or take advantage other products or services. The Apple eco-system is a great example of products that started with iPods and now stretches out to iPhones, Apple TVs, iPads, and more; all linked via iTunes and the Apple AppStore.
4. Passion and perseverance are key
People who introduce successful innovations have to be passionate about their ideas. To take something that is completely new and attempt to introduce it to people as something they need requires an amount of love and confidence in the idea. The fact that many other people will say it will never work or will deny the opportunity means that perseverance is crucial too. Without the will to persevere in implementing the idea a person is passionate about, innovation cannot survive.
5. The 70/20/10 portfolio
Simply stated:
-Put 70% of innovation efforts toward taking the competition’s money
-Put 20% of innovation efforts toward taking somebody else’s money (a customer or supplier)
-Put 10% of you innovation efforts toward creating something new and cool

Is the iPad the Most Hated Gadget Ever?
Mike Elgan from cultofmac.com seems to think so. In an interesting article on the cultofmac website he gives his reasoning for this suggestion.
Tablet makers hate the iPad because they can’t compete with the numbers unless they sell tablets for prices so cheap it comes as a loss. Other tablet markets like those found in aviation and medical industries hate the iPad because it costs a fraction of what their devices do and works far better. The toy industry hates the iPad because all the kids want one. And finally, the PC industry hates the iPad because more people are realizing that they don’t need a PC as much as they used to.
Elgan brings up some good points and even shares my feelings towards Amazon and their soon-to-be reasons for hating the iPad as well. With growing rumors of a 7.85-inch iPad replacing the iPod Touch, things don’t look so good for the Kindle Fire. About the only appealing thing about that device is the obvious low price point.
Head on over to check out the full article:

Widespread Battery Issues with iOS5
iPhone users everywhere are complaining about much weaker battery life in the iPhone since upgrading to iOS 5.
There’s been many theories as to why, but it seems that Apple is either avoiding or not willing to give a definitive answer to the actual issue. It is generally understood that iOS5 is going to use more battery than iOS4 based simply on the nature of the upgrade and all the things it’s doing in the background that never happened before. Things like backing up data and documents to iCloud, automatically downloading apps, music, and books, the notification center running, iMessage services running. There is a lot of new stuff going on in iOS5 and it seems to be impacting batteries everywhere.
The strange thing is – it’s not happening to everyone. I have personally worked on at least three devices where people complained about bad battery life. I’ve done things like start with removing the email profile and re-adding it, leading all the way up to completely wiping the device and manually piecing it back together, still get less life. I even deployed a brand new 4S on a Friday and on Saturday the executive spent time at the Apple store getting it replaced.
Apparently it’s quite a problem. A thread on Apple’s message board is up to more than 2,300 messages and 160 pages. It’s been viewed over 160,000 times, and it’s full of people getting noticeably terrible battery life. Some people even report actually being able to watch the drain and every few seconds the percentage drops.
The latest report I got from one of the higher ups says that my most recent fix seems to have fixed the problem completely. I disabled location services, and disabled the iPhone from being able to back up documents and data over 3G. This seems to have significantly improved battery life. Yesterday he got about 20% drain in 2.5 hours, today he’s only lost 4% after the same amount of time.
Looks like Apple decided to copy something from Android this time. “Terrible battery life: a new feature of iOS5!” (jokes.)

Why do people still use Blackberry?
Keyboards, security, and IT requirements seem to top the list.
According to an article written by Jon Brodkin of Arstechnica.com, there are a few reasons people still use Blackberry and will likely continue to use Blackberry for some time to come. There are still 70 million Blackberry users, so to anticipate them going away soon is a bit unrealistic. The market share for Blackberry has fallen from 18.7% to 11.7% in the second quarter alone. Despite their financial problems, service problems, dying investor confidence, the consumerization of IT, and lack of any new device capable of the advanced user experience iOS and Android users get, Blackberry still has some very strong things going their way.
“If it were up to IT managers there would still be only one solution out there and it would be called Blackberry”, says Dan Croft, CEO of Mission Critical Wireless, which helps businesses manage mobile deployments. What is being seen is not a removal of RIM from enterprises, but an addition of non-Blackberry devices. Even though iOS and Android support encryption, ActiveSync security policies, remote wipes, and tracking services, RIM security is more robust and easier to implement – especially after a company invests in a BES server. All Blackberry communications are routed through RIM’s Network Operations Center which adds a layer of encryption and tracking/logging of Blackberry communications – sometimes essential for corporations who need to comply with regulations around archiving such as those included with Sarbanes Oxley. But this also presents another layer for failure as seen with Blackberry’s global outage earlier this month.
There are also questions around the iOS and Android platform when it comes to securing the contents of a device. Being able to install apps can present a problem when users have their way with Dropbox, Box.net, and other “cloud” storage solutions. The legal department in most enterprises (Newmont included) usually are completely against putting company documents on a server they have no control over. Failing to present documents during an audit because the company did not know where they were stored could be a legal nightmare.
The article goes on to mention some other things like the desire for hard keyboards and the fact that there are people who use Blackberry simply because they have no choice, their IT department forces them into one device only with little regard to the alleged boost in efficiency that iOS and Android offers.

That’s Better Than Nothing…Oh Wait…
…actually, that is pretty much nothing.
Thanks RIM. Thanks for nothing. Ok, maybe that’s a bit harsh of me. After all, it’s not like Blackberry intended to have a global Blackberry outage. Co-CEO and RIM Founder Mike Lazaridis apologized in a YouTube video but obviously well-aware of their dying reputation among consumers and declining share of the smartphone market, RIM is offering a selection of premium apps for Blackberry.
The complete section is valued at about $100 for 12 apps and will be available starting on Wednesday for the next four weeks.

Android Captures Almost 44% of Smartphone Market Share
Showing a huge improvement and 5.6% gain over just three months ago, the Android operating system now owns almost 43.7% of the marketshare.
Now, before the anti-Apple crowd gets out of hand, it’s important to note that up to this point, Apple has only one handset available on only two carriers. Android has over 6-7 handsets available on all four major carriers, and a bunch of smaller ones (yes, Cricket even has an Android device). Not to excuse the facts, just pointing out the fact that it does make a difference.
Also noteworthy, RIM with the largest loss. Down 5% from just three months ago in terms of market share.

R.I.P. Steve Jobs 1955-2011
Rest in peace to a true innovator. He taught me that the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who actually change things. His attitude towards innovation and change will be impossible to duplicate. Thank you, Steve Jobs.

Apple Announces iPhone 4S. Available on Sprint!! No iPhone 5…yet.
I'm sure many people will be disappointed by the conference today, especially those who were really anticipating a new iPhone handset. Not to mention, most of the conference seemed to be rehash of the WWDC conference that took place earlier in the year. The new iPhone 4S might be enough to satisfy some people, but I know a lot of people want a full-fledged iPhone 5.
One demo that really impressed me was the Siri demo. Siri is the name of iOS's personal assistant. Just talk to Siri. Ask a question and it finds the answer, tell it to do something and it does it, ask it to set a reminder and it's done! The scenario that really made me smile went a little something like this:
Say I get a text message. Using my hands-free headset because my iPhone is in my pocket, I tell Siri "read the new message".
Siri says, "From Brandy: are you available for lunch on Friday?"
I say, "Check my availability for lunch on Friday"
Siri checks and says, "you are open on Friday"
I respond: "make an appointment for 1PM on Friday"
Siri makes the appointment and says: "Would you like to invite Brandy?"
I say, "Yes."
Of course, this scenario could go a bunch of different ways, but if Siri works even closely to the demo, it will be outstanding! Siri also did things like tell the weather, check stock prices, research a question, find a good Chinese Food restaurant, and set geo-based reminders from reminding me to do something when I get to a certain location and reminding me to do something when I leave a certain location.
Siri:
Perhaps the biggest news out of the event is the availability of an iPhone to Sprint. The Now Network is getting their first iPhone handset and pre-orders start on October 7th with the phone being available everywhere on October 14th.
Check out all the info on Apple's iPhone Website.

New Facebook App?
Original Article: Endgaget.com
Mark Zuckerberg ruffled some feathers when he said the iPad "isn't mobile" enough to deserve a dedicated Facebook app. But now it's U-turn time. TechCrunch just revealed that not only has Facebook created a fully-fledged iPad app, they've even released it -- albeit in secret. The code lies buried in yesterday's update to the iPhone app and it's entirely executable on jailbroken tablets. What's the software like? Well, TechCrunch reckons the left-sided navigation system and use of overlay menus is "great," as is the ability to chat with buddies while simultaneously doing other Facebook tasks in landscape mode. There's also a ton of screen grabs at the source link which tell much of the story. However, it surely won't be long before we can make our own minds up.
